- LES GRANDS CHAIS MONÉGASQUE -

Les Grands Chais Monégasques, a magical place with an authentic spirit.
History: the oldest wine cellar in the Principality of Monaco

- HERITAGE -

Les Grands Chais Monégasque

It was in the early 1900s that Mr. Ginocchio, a Monegasque merchant, decided to establish a wine merchant’s business, located about a hundred meters from the site where the Port of Monaco was to be built, along with its commercial wharf at the time.

Awarded the Gold Medal at the 1909 International Exposition in Paris, the wine business expanded significantly and, in 1943, became the corporation “Les Grands Chais Franco-Monégasques,” contributing to the growth of the French wine trade.

Bordeaux

The year 1855 marked a turning point for Bordeaux wines. With the introduction of the first classification, four châteaux were awarded the coveted title of Premier Cru Classé: Margaux, Haut-Brion, Latour, and Lafite-Rothschild. Château Mouton Rothschild joined this very select group a little later. Many other châteaux were awarded titles of Second, Third, and even Fifth Growth, or other titles such as Grand Cru for Cheval Blanc in Saint-Émilion. Pomerol, the appellation from which the prestigious PÉTRUS hails, is not included in any classification.

Bourgogne

Characterized by two grape varieties—Chardonnay for whites and Pinot Noir for reds—and a wide variety of wines produced from these two varieties, the Burgundy terroir offers us wines with diverse expressions, which can be found at the Grands Chais Monégasques in Monaco. Once a tropical sea some 200 million years ago, its limestone soil—composed of fossilized shells—has been passed down to us today, allowing Chardonnay and Pinot Noir to reach their full potential. From the finesse of a Chambolle-Musigny to the power of a Pommard; from the fruitiness of a Pouilly-Fuissé to the aromatic complexity of a Corton Charlemagne, the full range of Burgundy wines is available at Les Grands Chais Monégasques. Whether regional, communal, or Grand Cru appellations, all Burgundy wines have a place in our cellar.

Provence

World-renowned for its rosés, the Côtes de Provence appellation offers a range of wines in every color and from diverse origins, all of which are showcased at the Grands Chais Monégasques. Nestled between the sea and the mountains, the vineyards benefit from the mild climate brought by the sea and the coolness of the hills. Winds from the Mediterranean caress the vines, warding off disease, while the sun nurtures the grapes that will yield exquisite wines.

Loire Valley

From the freshness of the Atlantic captured in a glass of Muscadet-sur-lie to the mineral-rich, multi-layered aromas of the Sancerre wines from the inland region, the journey along this long river dotted with châteaux and vineyards will be showcased in our cellars. White Melon (known locally as “Muscadet”), Chenin Blanc, and Sauvignon Blanc—these three grape varieties each reign supreme in their respective terroirs. From the lightest and most fruity wines near the coast to the smokier, more aromatic ones found further up the Loire between Orléans and Nevers, a tour of this region can be experienced through its aromas, intertwined with the history of France.

Rhône Valley

The origins of modern AOCs in France and around the world are linked to this region. Indeed, it was Baron Le Roy who succeeded in classifying one of France’s first appellations, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, in 1933. Its specifications then became the model for all subsequent AOC applications. Discover this fascinating history of wine at the Grands Chais Monégasques! Long before that, when the popes chose Avignon as their residence, they decided to bring in winemakers from Cahors to improve the quality of the region’s wines, until the terroir gained a reputation and was listed as Châteauneuf-du-Pape in the mid-14th century.

Wines of the World

“Unico” from the Vega Sicilia winery, “Masseto” from Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, or “Opus One” from Mondavi-Rothschild: the world’s finest wines take center stage at Les Grands Chais in the Principality of Monaco. Traditional producers from Italy’s Piedmont region, such as Bartolo Mascarello, F. Rinaldi, and Angelo Gaja, among others, are featured alongside New World wines, such as “Nicola” from Catena Zapata and “Dark Blossom” from Sine Qua Non. A journey through the world’s vineyards awaits in our cellars in Monaco. From the freshness of a South African Sauvignon Blanc to the myriad aromas of a New Zealand Pinot Noir, and the velvety smoothness of a Chilean Carmenère, every facet of the wine world is explored at the Grands Chais Monégasques.

Champagnes

In our cellar, where the temperature and humidity have been specifically designed for Champagnes, the finest golden bubbles come into their own: Krug Clos du Mesnil, Dom Pérignon Oenothèque, Cristal Roederer, Salon “S” Blanc de Blancs, Jacques Selosse… The finest wines and Champagnes find their way into our cellars in Monaco. The Champagne terroir is unique in its climate, soil, subsoil, and topography. The region’s winemakers have thus brought to life three king grape varieties: Chardonnay through its liveliness, Meunier through its roundness, and Pinot Noir through its body. Sometimes blended to complement one another, sometimes used alone to express the full extent of their attributes, great houses such as Louis Roederer, Pol Roger, Perrier-Jouët, Laurent-Perrier, Deutz, Billecart-Salmon, Bollinger, Gosset, Krug, Ruinart, and Dom Pérignon open up a captivating world of sparkling wines with fruity aromas, ranging from candied fruit to brioche, dates, or coffee…

Spirits

Rare spirits—whisky, rum, cognac, armagnac, vodka, tequila, grappa, calvados, port, gin, Vieille Prune, sake…—the aromas of the finest spirits from every corner of the globe fill our cellars in Monaco. Embark on a journey through the peaty notes of Islay whiskies in Scotland, the harmony of Japanese single malts, the smoothness of tropical rums, and the strength of vodka from the northern steppes… With every occasion, a new world unfolds, inviting you on an exploration of the flavors and history of a region tied to a particular drink.
